Home décor and wall hangings by BHAMINI

As part of the home decor category, we at BHAMINI have a variety of wall hangings to offer. Again, the essence of the hangings is the traditional handicrafts and arts of India.

The Leather Hangings are inspired from the ancient craft of Tholu Bommalata or commonly known as Leather Puppetry. This is an artform from Andhra Pradesh where artisans make wafer thin puppets from goat hides and traditionally used to travel from village to village enacting stories from the mythology. With time, the art form is now expressed in various mediums and these wall hangings are one such form of expression.

The leather is sliced thinly, then, various designs inspired from nature like animal figures, birds, insects like butterfly, Flowers, God figures etc. are drawn. The designs are then coloured by hand using natural colours. They are then strung together using wooden beads.  There are tiny perforations in the designs which help light to pass through. This helps to naturally illuminate the vibrant paintings. The hangings can be placed on the door frames in a pair or can be singly hung  in a corner or multiple pieces can be strung across a wall.

The Patachitra Hangings come from the state of Odisha . The traditional art of Patachitra i.e. painting on a palm leaf or canvas is replicated on wooden pieces and then stitched onto a slim strip of woven mat. The two dimensional wooden pieces are carved in the shape of the basic form for eg. Fish, bird, or God Figure like Ganesha. Then, intricate patterns are painted to bring alive the said forms. The natural coloured woven cane mats helps to bring out the complex colour scheme of the wooden pieces. A simple piping and a thread to place the hanging on a nail or hook completes the look of the Patachitra hanging. These hangings come in different forms like Fish Hangings, Bird Hangings, Animal Hangings, God Figure Hangings like Ganesha and Dash Avtar .

The Cone Art Hangings are a contemporary take on the traditional henna art used for centuries by the ladies in the state of Rajasthan. The technique is the same as how one applies the henna. Here, cones are made of the colour mix. The wooden pieces are carved into various motifs like flowers, sun, elephant, butterfly, etc. A base colour coat is applied. Then the coloured cones are used to create designs just as it’s done while applying henna. The pieces are further embellished with sequins and coloured metal beads and then strung with coloured threads. A modern look to an age old traditional artform. These hangings will look very attractive in the balconies or window sills and add that touch of cheerful colour to the children or teenagers room.

We intend to add more types of hangings to this decor category. Keep an eye out for our fabric and macramé hangings on our site soon.
